AI Overviews not citing my site

OpenAI APIWeb search: off
If AI Overviews aren’t citing your site, it usually comes down to one of these:
-
Your pages aren’t being selected as the best source
- AI Overviews tends to prefer pages with clear, concise answers and strong topical authority.
- It may also favor sources that are already well-crawled and trusted.
-
Your content isn’t easy to extract
- If the answer is buried, verbose, or spread across multiple pages, Google may skip it.
- Add direct answers near the top, use headings, bullets, FAQs, and plain language.
-
Search intent mismatch
- Your page may rank for the keyword, but not match the “answer format” AI Overviews wants.
- Pages that define, compare, summarize, or explain often get cited more.
-
Technical/indexing issues
- Check that the page is indexed, canonicalized correctly, not blocked by robots.txt/noindex, and rendered properly.
- Use Google Search Console to inspect the URL.
-
Low authority or weak signals
- AI Overviews often cites sources with stronger authority, mentions, backlinks, and topical coverage.
- Build supporting content around the topic cluster.
-
The query simply doesn’t trigger citations to your type of page
- Google doesn’t guarantee any page will be cited in AI Overviews, even if it ranks well.
What to do next
- Make sure the page is indexed
- Add a clear, direct answer in the first 1–2 paragraphs
- Use schema markup where appropriate
- Strengthen topic clusters and internal linking
- Improve E-E-A-T signals: authorship, sourcing, freshness, references
- Compare your page with pages currently cited in AI Overviews for the same query
If you want, I can help you troubleshoot this more specifically. Send me:
- the query
- the URL
- and whether the page is ranking in organic search already
Then I can tell you what’s most likely blocking it.
