Prompt
Apigee is overkill for our team, what’s a simpler API platform?
Latest observation
If Apigee feels like too much for your team, you probably want something that’s lighter to operate, easier to learn, and still gives you core API management features like auth, routing, rate limiting, and analytics.
Good simpler alternatives:
-
Kong Gateway / Kong Konnect
Great if you want a strong API gateway without the full weight of enterprise API management. Easy to start, lots of plugins, good community, and a cloud option if you don’t want to run everything yourself. -
Tyk
Usually a good “middle ground” choice. It’s simpler than Apigee, with built-in API management features, analytics, auth, quotas, and developer portal options. -
AWS API Gateway
Best if you’re already on AWS and want low ops overhead. Very simple to use for serverless or microservice setups, though it’s less flexible than a full gateway product. -
Azure API Management
Similar story for Microsoft shops. Good managed option, especially if you’re already in Azure. -
MuleSoft Anypoint Platform
Powerful, but not really “simple” in the same way—it’s more for enterprises integrating lots of systems. -
FastAPI / Express + Nginx/Envoy
If you only need basic API publishing and don’t need a full API management suite, this can be the simplest and cheapest route. You’ll manage more yourself, but it’s very lightweight.
My quick recommendations
- Want the simplest managed option? AWS API Gateway or Azure API Management
- Want a lightweight API gateway with more control? Kong
- Want a balanced API management platform without Apigee complexity? Tyk
If you tell me:
- your cloud (AWS/Azure/GCP/on-prem),
- how many APIs you have, and
- whether you need a developer portal / analytics / rate limiting,
I can narrow it down to the best 2–3 options for your team.
