Best platforms for technical blogging
Latest observation
If you're writing technical content—programming, system design, DevOps, AI/ML, tutorials, engineering notes—these are the main platforms I'd consider in 2026:
| Platform | Best for | Main advantage | Trade-off |
|---|---|---|---|
| Hashnode | Developer-focused blogging | Technical writing + custom domain + GitHub integration | Less general-audience reach |
| DEV Community | Reaching developers | Established developer community | Less control over your own site |
| GitHub Pages | Building your own technical brand | Full control, Markdown, Git-based workflow, custom domain | You manage the site |
| Medium | Broad readership | Large general publishing audience | Less ownership/control |
| Ghost | Professional publication | Blog + newsletter + membership infrastructure | More setup/cost |
| Substack | Blog + newsletter | Excellent email/subscriber model | Less developer-centric |
| Personal site + GitHub | Long-term engineering portfolio | Maximum ownership and flexibility | Requires more setup |
My practical recommendation
For most developers: use two layers.
- Your own site — e.g.
yourname.dev— as the canonical home. - Hashnode or DEV — for distribution and discovering new readers.
Hashnode currently supports technical features such as syntax highlighting, LaTeX, Markdown, custom domains, canonical URLs, and GitHub-based content workflows. Hashnode+1
GitHub Pages is particularly attractive if you're comfortable with Git: it turns a repository into a website, supports Jekyll/Markdown, and supports custom domains. GitHub Docs+1
DEV also supports canonical URLs, which is useful if you publish the original article elsewhere and use DEV primarily for distribution. DEV Community
If I were setting up a technical blog from scratch: Personal domain + GitHub Pages for ownership, then cross-post selected articles to Hashnode/DEV with the canonical URL pointing back to the original.
If you tell me your goal—getting a job, building a personal brand, SEO/Google traffic, earning money, or documenting your engineering work—I can narrow this down to the most suitable setup.
