OpenAI APIWeb search: off
Yes — and the fastest way to approach it is to treat AI Overviews like a selection problem: Google is choosing pages it trusts, understands, and can quote cleanly.
What usually prevents pages from being cited
-
Weak “answerability”
- The page doesn’t directly answer the question in the first screenful.
- Key facts are buried in marketing copy.
-
Poor extractability
- No concise definitions, bullets, tables, FAQs, or step-by-step sections.
- Important info is spread across long paragraphs.
-
Insufficient authority/trust
- Thin content, little evidence, no author expertise, weak brand signals, limited backlinks or mentions.
-
Mismatch with search intent
- The page targets the topic, but not the exact question AI Overview is trying to answer.
-
Technical/indexing issues
- Crawl/index problems, canonical confusion, JS rendering issues, or content not visible in HTML.
-
Lack of entity clarity
- Google can’t easily tell what the page is about, who it’s for, and how it relates to other relevant entities.
What to change first
If you want the biggest impact fastest, prioritize in this order:
1) Rewrite the page so the answer appears immediately
- Put a direct answer in the first 100–150 words.
- Use the exact question as an H2 where relevant.
- Add a short summary box at the top:
- definition
- key takeaways
- when to use it
- 3–5 supporting facts
2) Make the content easier to quote
Add:
- bullet lists
- comparison tables
- numbered steps
- short FAQ blocks
- concise definitions
- statistic callouts with sources
3) Strengthen trust signals
- named author
- author bio with relevant credentials
- editorial review process
- citations to primary sources
- updated date
- clear company/about/contact info
4) Improve topical coverage
- cover related sub-questions people ask
- include “what it is,” “how it works,” “pros/cons,” “cost,” “examples,” “mistakes,” “alternatives”
- add internal links to deeper supporting pages
5) Fix technical issues
Check:
- page indexed?
- canonical correct?
- noindex anywhere?
- content visible without login?
- fast enough/mobile-friendly?
- clean structured data?
A practical diagnostic framework
For each target page, ask:
- Does it answer the query better than competitors in 2–5 seconds?
- Can a machine pull a clean quote or fact from it?
- Would a human trust this page enough to cite it?
- Is the content specific, current, and evidence-backed?
- Is the page clearly about one primary entity/topic?
If the answer to any of those is “no,” that’s likely the issue.
Best first experiment
Pick one page and do this:
- Add a concise answer at the top.
- Add a “Key facts” section.
- Add FAQ schema if appropriate.
- Add authoritative sources.
- Tighten the page around one search intent.
- Re-crawl and monitor impressions/engagement.
