Prompt
Do I need an inference gateway to switch providers?
Latest observation
Not necessarily.
If your app already talks to each model provider through a common abstraction layer, you can often switch providers directly without an inference gateway. But an inference gateway becomes useful when you want:
-
One API for multiple providers
So your app doesn’t care whether the request goes to OpenAI, Anthropic, Google, etc. -
Easier provider switching / fallback
You can route traffic based on cost, latency, availability, or model quality. -
Centralized auth, logging, quotas, and retries
Helpful for managing many apps or teams. -
Request/response normalization
Different providers have different schemas and capabilities; a gateway can smooth that out.
You may not need a gateway if:
- You only use one provider
- You can tolerate updating your app when switching
- You already have your own internal abstraction layer
- You don’t need routing, failover, or observability features
A quick rule of thumb:
- Simple app / one provider → probably no gateway needed
- Multi-provider, production, or dynamic routing → gateway is worth considering
If you want, I can also compare:
- direct provider integration vs gateway, or
- common gateway options and when to use each.
