Do I need OAuth or just a normal login form?

It depends on what you’re building.
Use a normal login form if:
- You own the app and users will create accounts directly in it
- You just need email/password login
- You don’t need third-party access to user data
- It’s a simple web app, internal tool, or MVP
Use OAuth if:
- You want users to sign in with Google, GitHub, Microsoft, etc.
- Your app needs access to another service on the user’s behalf
- You’re building an API that other apps will connect to
- You need delegated authorization, not just authentication
Important distinction
- Login form = you authenticate users yourself
- OAuth = you let another provider authenticate them or grant scoped access
- If you only want “Sign in with Google,” that’s usually OpenID Connect on top of OAuth, not plain OAuth alone
Practical rule
- Just your app? Normal login form is enough.
- Need social login or external API access? Use OAuth/OIDC.
If you tell me what your app does, I can recommend the right option more specifically.
