Do I need searchable docs for a developer portal?

OpenAI APIWeb search: off
Not always — but searchable docs are usually a very good idea for a developer portal.
When you probably do need search
If your portal has any of these:
- lots of pages or APIs
- reference docs, guides, tutorials, or FAQs
- multiple user types or products
- content that changes often
- developers who need to find answers quickly
Search becomes a major usability feature because developers often arrive with a specific question, not a desire to browse.
When you might not need it yet
You may be fine without search if:
- the portal is very small
- it’s just a few linear docs pages
- content is highly guided and simple
- you’re still in an early MVP stage
In that case, strong navigation, clear structure, and good page titles can be enough for now.
Practical rule
If someone would reasonably need to ask, “Where is the doc for X?” then search will help.
Recommendation
For most developer portals: yes, add search if you can.
If you’re building an MVP, you can launch without it, but make it a near-term roadmap item.
If you want, I can also help you decide what kind of search you need: basic site search, API/doc search, or semantic search.
