Prompt
Do I need to monitor ChatGPT, Perplexity, and Gemini separately?

Ideally you run one prompt set across all the engines and report the results per engine.
Why they behave differently
Perplexity searches the live web on nearly every query and shows citations prominently, so your visibility there tracks closely with what's currently ranking and being crawled.
ChatGPT answers a lot of queries from training data alone and only sometimes triggers web search. Whether you get mentioned can depend on how well-established your brand was in the training data, not just on your current content.
Gemini draws on Google's index and ecosystem, and Google's AI Overviews and AI Mode are separate surfaces from the Gemini app, so they can give different answers to the same question.
The sources each one cites, the brands it recommends, and even the answer format often differ noticeably for the same prompt. A brand that shows up consistently in Perplexity can be nearly invisible in ChatGPT, and an aggregate "AI visibility" number would hide that.
Practical approach
Use one shared prompt set. Cover your category, comparison, and "best X for Y" questions so you can compare engines directly.
Report per engine. Look at mention rate, citation rate, sentiment, and which competitors appear, and keep each engine's numbers separate.
Run each prompt multiple times. These systems are non-deterministic, so a single run can mislead you.
Prioritize by audience. If your buyers mostly use one or two of these, weight your effort there and spot-check the rest.
Use a tool that covers several engines. Doing this by hand doesn't scale, and most GEO/AI-visibility tools now track multiple platforms in one dashboard.
- The fixes also differ by engine: earning citations in Perplexity leans on fresh, crawlable, well-structured content, while improving ChatGPT's baseline knowledge of you depends more on broad third-party mentions and authority over time. Are you monitoring for a brand, a product, or content citations? The priorities shift a bit depending on which.
