Not necessarily. You should switch to SSO if it solves a real need, not just because it exists.
You likely should move to SSO if:
- Your users are mostly in larger companies
- They already expect Okta, Azure AD, Google Workspace, etc.
- You need centralized access control and easier offboarding
- You’re selling to enterprises and it’s becoming a sales requirement
- You want to reduce password-related support and security risk
Custom auth may still be fine if:
- You’re serving small teams or consumers
- Your product is self-serve and login simplicity matters
- Your users don’t ask for enterprise identity features
- You don’t want the added complexity of:
- SAML/OIDC integrations
- account linking
- provisioning/deprovisioning
- edge cases around email domains and multiple IdPs
A common approach
Keep custom auth for the core product, and add SSO as an enterprise feature. That gives you:
- low-friction signup/login for everyone
- SSO for customers who need it
- a path to enterprise upsell
Rule of thumb
If more than a few of your target customers are asking, “Do you support SSO?” and saying they need it to buy, it’s time to add it.
If you want, I can help you decide based on your product type, customer size, and current auth setup.
