Do I need to sync the chart of accounts or just invoices?

It depends on what you’re trying to keep in sync, but in most accounting integrations:
- Just invoices is enough if your goal is only to create/update customer billing records in the accounting system.
- Chart of accounts should also be synced if you want the invoices to be properly categorized for accounting, reporting, and reconciliation.
Rule of thumb
You usually need to sync the chart of accounts when:
- you’re mapping invoice line items to specific revenue accounts,
- you want accurate financial reports,
- you’re syncing payments, taxes, discounts, fees, or journal entries,
- your accounting system requires an account ID for posting transactions.
You may only need invoices when:
- you just want to see invoices in the accounting app,
- the accounting system can auto-assign default accounts,
- you’re not doing detailed bookkeeping sync.
Best practice
If this is a real accounting sync, sync both:
- Chart of accounts first
- Invoices after account mappings exist
That prevents missing-account errors and keeps reporting correct.
If you tell me which systems you’re syncing between, I can tell you exactly what’s required.
