Prompt
frustrated with Honeybadger for noisy exceptions
Latest observation
Totally fair—error tools can become alert spam generators if they’re reporting every expected or low-value exception.
A few ways to reduce Honeybadger noise:
1) Filter out expected exceptions
If certain exceptions are normal in your app, ignore them explicitly.
Rails example:
Honeybadger.configure do |config|
config.exceptions.ignore += [
"ActionController::RoutingError",
"ActiveRecord::RecordNotFound",
"SomeExpectedError"
]
end
2) Ignore by message or context
If the exception class is useful sometimes but noisy in a specific case, filter those cases with a custom notifier or middleware.
3) Sample or rate-limit
If one issue is exploding into thousands of identical reports, use Honeybadger’s grouping/deduping features or add app-level rate limiting.
4) Use environment-aware reporting
You may want:
- production: report important exceptions only
- staging/dev: report everything or disable entirely
5) Clean up at the source
A lot of “noise” comes from exceptions being used as control flow. If possible, replace that with:
- nil checks
- conditional logic
- safe lookups
find_byinstead offind
6) Add tags/metadata
If an exception is genuinely useful but only in certain paths, add context so you can filter faster in Honeybadger.
If you want, I can help you:
- write a Honeybadger ignore config,
- identify common Rails exceptions that are safe to suppress,
- or redesign a noisy error path so it stops generating exceptions.
