Prompt
How do I generate multiple variants of the same prompt through an API?

You can generate multiple variants of the same prompt by either:
- Using one API call that requests multiple completions, or
- Calling the API multiple times with small prompt changes.
1) Single call, multiple completions
If your API supports it, request several outputs at once using a parameter like:
n: number of completionsnum_return_sequencesbest_of- or a similar setting depending on the provider
Example idea
{
"prompt": "Write a product description for a reusable water bottle.",
"n": 3
}
This returns 3 different variants for the same prompt.
2) Vary the prompt slightly
If you want more controlled diversity, programmatically tweak the prompt:
- “Write a formal version…”
- “Write a casual version…”
- “Write a concise version…”
Example:
styles = ["formal", "casual", "playful"]
for style in styles:
prompt = f"Write a {style} product description for a reusable water bottle."
# call API
3) Use sampling settings to increase diversity
If supported, adjust generation parameters such as:
temperature— higher = more variedtop_p— broader samplingpresence_penalty/frequency_penalty— reduce repetition
Example:
temperature=0.7for moderate variationtemperature=1.0or higher for more creative differences
4) Ask the model for multiple variants in one response
You can also explicitly request multiple versions in the prompt:
“Generate 5 different versions of this answer, each with a different tone.”
This is useful if your API doesn’t support multiple completions directly.
Practical recommendation
If your API supports it, the best approach is usually:
- Set
nto the number of variants - Use a slightly higher temperature
- Keep the prompt clear about what differences you want
If you want, I can show you how to do this in a specific API or SDK, like OpenAI Python, JavaScript, or another platform.
