You usually know an email bounced when you get a bounce notification from the mail system.
Common signs
- Delivery Status Notification / Mail Delivery Subsystem / postmaster email
- Error messages like:
- Undelivered Mail Returned to Sender
- Delivery failed
- 550 or 5xx SMTP error codes
- Mailbox unavailable
- Recipient address rejected
What a bounce means
A bounce happens when the receiving server refuses the message or can’t deliver it. Common reasons:
- Wrong or non-existent address
- Recipient mailbox is full
- Email blocked by spam filters
- Domain/server is down
- Your sending domain/IP is not authorized or has poor reputation
Soft bounce vs hard bounce
- Hard bounce: permanent failure, like invalid address or domain doesn’t exist
- Soft bounce: temporary failure, like a full inbox or server issue
If you’re sending from an app or email service
You can detect bounces by:
- Checking the bounce email sent to your return address
- Using an email service provider’s bounce webhook/API
- Monitoring SMTP response codes at send time
If you want, I can also show you how to detect bounces in Gmail, Outlook, or through SMTP/API code.
