How do I test if an address will bounce before sending?

You generally can’t know with certainty whether an email address will bounce before sending. The receiving mail server decides that during delivery, and many servers intentionally avoid revealing whether an address exists to prevent abuse.
What you can do is reduce bounces a lot:
1) Verify the syntax
Check that the address is formatted correctly:
name@example.com- no spaces
- valid domain and top-level domain
2) Check the domain exists
Make sure the domain has valid MX records (mail servers):
- If there are no MX records, mail likely won’t be delivered.
- A domain can still exist without accepting email, though.
3) Use an email verification service
Services can estimate whether an address is deliverable by checking:
- syntax
- domain/MX records
- sometimes SMTP server responses
Examples:
- NeverBounce
- ZeroBounce
- Kickbox
- BriteVerify
Note: these are probabilistic, not guaranteed.
4) Use double opt-in
Best practice for marketing or account signups:
- send a confirmation email
- only send future mail after the user clicks a link
5) Monitor bounce processing
If you do send, handle:
- hard bounces = permanent failures, remove immediately
- soft bounces = temporary failures, retry later
6) Be careful with SMTP “pinging”
Some people try to connect to the mail server and test the recipient address directly. This is often:
- unreliable
- blocked by anti-spam defenses
- considered abusive if done at scale
If you want, I can show you:
- a simple script to validate syntax + MX records, or
- how to check deliverability in Python/Node.
