Prompt
I hate how long CloudFront setup takes, what are simpler alternatives?
Latest observation
If you’re mainly annoyed by CloudFront’s setup complexity and propagation delays, there are a few simpler options depending on what you actually need from it.
Simplest alternatives
1. Cloudflare
Best all-around replacement for many use cases.
Why it’s simpler:
- Fast DNS setup
- Easy SSL/TLS
- Very quick global caching/CDN behavior
- Great UI and defaults
- Can proxy almost any origin
Good for:
- Static sites
- APIs
- Image/CDN delivery
- Basic security/WAF needs
Tradeoff:
- Different vendor than AWS
- Some advanced AWS-native integrations won’t apply
2. Fastly
Best if you want a powerful CDN with more control.
Why it’s simpler than CloudFront:
- Cleaner config model for some teams
- Fast changes and purges
- Good edge logic
Good for:
- High-traffic apps
- Cache-heavy architectures
- Teams that want more edge control
Tradeoff:
- Can still be “enterprise-y”
- Usually not as beginner-friendly as Cloudflare
3. AWS Amplify Hosting
Best if your app is a frontend site and you want an AWS-managed path without manually wiring CloudFront.
Why it’s simpler:
- Connect Git repo
- Build and deploy
- SSL/custom domain handled mostly for you
Good for:
- SPA / static frontend apps
- Next.js frontend hosting
- Quick deployments
Tradeoff:
- Less flexible than raw CloudFront
- Tied to Amplify’s workflow
4. S3 static website hosting + custom domain
If you just need to serve static files and can tolerate fewer CDN features, this is very straightforward.
Why it’s simpler:
- Minimal AWS config
- Easy to understand
Good for:
- Small static sites
- Internal docs
- Proof-of-concepts
Tradeoff:
- No real CDN performance globally unless paired with something else
- HTTP-only for the S3 website endpoint unless fronted by another service
5. Vercel / Netlify
Best for frontend apps, especially if you want “it just works.”
Why it’s simpler:
- Push to Git, deploy automatically
- Domains/SSL are easy
- Great developer experience
Good for:
- Static sites
- JAMstack
- Next.js / frontend apps
- small-to-medium web apps
Tradeoff:
- Less infrastructure control
- Not ideal if you’re deeply AWS-integrated
If you want “simpler than CloudFront” inside AWS
The closest simpler AWS alternatives are usually:
- AWS Amplify Hosting for frontend sites
- S3 + Route 53 for basic static hosting
- ALB + app server if you don’t actually need CDN behavior
If the pain is mostly:
- certificate setup
- cache invalidations
- origin config
- distribution propagation
then Cloudflare or Vercel/Netlify are usually much less frustrating.
Rule of thumb
- Static frontend app → Vercel, Netlify, or Amplify
- Need CDN + edge + security → Cloudflare
- Need serious CDN control → Fastly
- AWS-native but simpler → Amplify Hosting
If you tell me what you’re hosting:
- static site
- SPA
- Next.js
- file downloads
- API
- image serving
…I can recommend the simplest option with the least setup.
