If you’re a solo developer and “good webhooks” matters, I’d shortlist these:
Best overall for webhook quality
Mailgun
- Very solid event webhooks: delivered, bounced, complained, opened, clicked, unsubscribed, etc.
- Easy to integrate and well-documented.
- Good for app/product email and transactionals.
Best developer experience
Postmark
- Excellent docs and very clean event webhooks.
- Great for transactional email.
- Less noisy than some providers; events are reliable and easy to reason about.
Strong all-around option
SendGrid
- Mature, widely used, lots of webhook/event options.
- Can be a bit more complex and “enterprise-y” than Postmark/Mailgun.
Also worth considering
Amazon SES + SNS/EventBridge
- Cheapest at scale, but setup is more involved.
- Webhooks are not as straightforward as the others.
My recommendation
- If you want simple + reliable: Postmark
- If you want more flexibility/features: Mailgun
- If you want cheap and don’t mind AWS plumbing: SES
What to look for in “good webhooks”
- Delivery, bounce, complaint, open, click, unsubscribe events
- Retries on failed webhook delivery
- Signature verification
- Event IDs for deduplication
- Clear docs and payloads
If you want, I can give you a ranked list by ease of integration, or narrow it down for transactional vs marketing email.
