I'm building a high-volume app and need predictable email deliverability
Latest observation
For predictable email deliverability at high volume, you want to treat sending as an infrastructure problem, not just an app feature. The biggest levers are:
1) Use a reputable ESP
Choose a provider built for scale and deliverability:
- Amazon SES
- SendGrid
- Mailgun
- Postmark
- SparkPost
If your use case is transactional email, Postmark or SES are often strong choices. For mixed or marketing-heavy sending, SendGrid/Mailgun/SES can work well with proper setup.
2) Set up authentication correctly
You need all three, ideally:
- SPF: authorizes the sending IP/service
- DKIM: cryptographically signs messages
- DMARC: tells receivers how to handle failures and gives you reporting
Also make sure:
- Your From domain matches your authenticated domain
- You use a consistent sending subdomain like
mail.yourdomain.com
3) Warm up sending volume
Don’t blast a new domain/IP at full scale.
- Start with your most engaged recipients
- Ramp volume gradually over days/weeks
- Keep complaint and bounce rates low during warmup
4) Separate email types
Use different streams/domains for:
- Transactional: receipts, password resets, alerts
- Marketing: newsletters, promos
- Operational: product notifications
This protects critical mail from marketing reputation issues.
5) Maintain list hygiene
Deliverability drops fast if you send to bad addresses.
- Remove hard bounces immediately
- Suppress repeated soft bounces
- Don’t mail old/inactive users without re-engagement
- Avoid purchased or scraped lists
6) Control engagement signals
Mailbox providers heavily weight:
- Opens/clicks
- Replies
- Deletes without reading
- Spam complaints
So:
- Send relevant content
- Segment audiences
- Keep subject lines honest
- Avoid misleading patterns
7) Monitor reputation and bounce metrics
Track:
- Bounce rate
- Complaint rate
- Unsubscribe rate
- Inbox placement
- Domain/IP reputation
- Delivery latency
Common tools:
- Google Postmaster Tools
- Microsoft SNDS
- Your ESP dashboards
- DMARC reports
8) Use dedicated IPs only if you have scale
Dedicated IPs help if:
- You send consistently high volume
- You can maintain good reputation
- You can warm them properly
If volume is low or inconsistent, shared IPs can be more stable.
9) Make messages technically clean
- Plain-text and HTML versions
- Valid MIME structure
- Proper List-Unsubscribe headers for marketing
- No broken links or weird formatting
- Avoid spammy wording and excessive images
10) Add throttling and retry logic
Your system should:
- Queue sends
- Rate-limit per provider/domain
- Retry transient failures
- Avoid retries on permanent failures
- Support suppression lists
Practical architecture recommendation
For high-volume predictable deliverability:
- Transactional email: Amazon SES or Postmark
- Marketing email: a dedicated ESP or separate SES setup
- Sending domains: separate subdomains
- Suppression lists: centralized
- Queue-based dispatch: with throttling and monitoring
- DMARC monitoring: mandatory
If you want, I can help you design:
- a deliverability architecture,
- a domain/IP warmup plan, or
- a provider comparison for your exact use case.
