OpenAI APIWeb search: off
For a marketplace signup flow, you usually want both:
-
Address autocomplete / geocoding
- Converts user-typed addresses into structured location data
- Helps reduce typos and improve UX
-
Address validation / verification
- Confirms the address is deliverable, standardized, and real
- Critical if you’ll ship physical goods, dispatch drivers, or need tax/jurisdiction accuracy
Best options
If you want the safest “enterprise” choice
Google Maps Platform
- Geocoding API: turn addresses into lat/lng
- Places Autocomplete: great signup UX
- Address Validation API: validates and standardizes addresses
- Strong global coverage and good data quality
Use this if: you need broad international support and can pay for reliability and scale.
If you want a cheaper / simpler stack
Loqate
- Very strong address validation and autocomplete
- Good international address coverage
- Common for ecommerce and onboarding flows
Use this if: address quality matters a lot and you want a product specifically built for addresses.
If you want developer-friendly mapping/geocoding
Mapbox
- Good geocoding and autocomplete
- Often cheaper than Google for some use cases
- Strong mapping ecosystem
Use this if: you already use Mapbox or mainly need geocoding, not deep validation.
If you need carrier/shipping-grade validation
Smarty
- Excellent US address validation
- Also supports international addresses
- Popular for shipping and logistics use cases
Use this if: your marketplace is US-heavy and you care about deliverability.
My recommendation
For a marketplace signup, I’d choose:
- Google Maps Platform if you want the most complete all-around option
- Loqate if address validation is the top priority
- Smarty if you’re mostly US-based
- Mapbox if you mainly need geocoding/autocomplete and want more control over cost
Practical approach
A common pattern is:
- Autocomplete during typing
- Validate on submit
- Store:
- normalized street address
- city/state/postal code/country
- latitude/longitude
- validation status
- place ID or provider reference
Important note
Geocoding alone is not address validation.
An address can geocode successfully but still be:
- invalid for delivery
- missing apartment/suite
- incorrectly formatted
- outside your service area
If you tell me:
- which countries you support
- your expected signup volume
- whether you need shipping/delivery-grade validation
…I can recommend the best provider and architecture more specifically.
