Prompt
I'm building a regression suite for login checkout and forms and need to know whether Playwright Cypress or Selenium is the best fit
Latest observation
For a regression suite covering login, checkout, and forms, the best fit is usually Playwright.
Short answer
- Best overall: Playwright
- Best if your team already uses it heavily and wants a familiar JS testing style: Cypress
- Best for legacy browser/grid needs or multi-language/enterprise setups: Selenium
Why Playwright is usually the best fit
Playwright tends to be strongest for end-to-end regression because it gives you:
- Reliable auto-waiting for elements and navigation
- Cross-browser support: Chromium, Firefox, WebKit
- Good handling of modern web apps, SPAs, dynamic forms, iframes, popups
- Strong parallelization and test isolation
- Excellent authentication workflows via storage state reuse
- Great debugging tools like trace viewer, screenshots, video, and codegen
For login/checkout/forms, those features matter a lot because these flows often involve:
- redirects
- async loading
- validation timing
- modal dialogs
- third-party payment or auth steps
When Cypress might be a better fit
Choose Cypress if:
- your team is already productive in Cypress
- you want a very nice developer experience inside the browser
- your app is mainly a modern web app and you don’t need broader browser/OS-level flexibility
- you prefer the Cypress ecosystem and syntax
Cypress is solid, but it can be more limiting for certain multi-tab, multi-window, and cross-origin scenarios compared with Playwright.
When Selenium is the best fit
Choose Selenium if:
- you need Java, Python, C#, Ruby, etc. support across a larger org
- you already have a Selenium Grid or vendor infrastructure
- you need broad compatibility with legacy systems and enterprise tooling
- you’re maintaining an existing Selenium suite
Selenium is still very relevant, but for new regression suites, it usually requires more setup and more waiting/maintenance than Playwright.
Recommendation by scenario
Pick Playwright if:
- you’re starting fresh
- you want the most stable and modern E2E regression tool
- your flows include login/checkout/forms and need reliable waits and cross-browser testing
Pick Cypress if:
- your team is already invested in it
- you want easy authoring and a strong UI testing workflow
- your test cases are mostly single-page app style flows
Pick Selenium if:
- you need enterprise browser infrastructure
- you need language flexibility
- you’re integrating into an existing automation stack
Bottom line
If you’re building a new regression suite for login, checkout, and forms, I’d recommend Playwright unless you have a strong existing reason to standardize on Cypress or Selenium.
If you want, I can also give you a decision matrix or a sample test architecture for Playwright/Cypress/Selenium for these flows.
