I'm building a SaaS with Next.js and Supabase. What's the simplest email API?

If you want the simplest email API for a Next.js + Supabase SaaS, I’d usually recommend one of these:
Best simple choice: Resend
Why it’s simple:
- Very clean API
- Great for transactional emails
- Easy to use with Next.js
- Good DX, minimal setup
- Works well for signup emails, magic links, password resets, notifications
Example:
import { Resend } from "resend";
const resend = new Resend(process.env.RESEND_API_KEY);
await resend.emails.send({
from: "Acme <onboarding@acme.com>",
to: "user@example.com",
subject: "Welcome!",
html: "<p>Thanks for signing up.</p>",
});
Also good: Postmark
- Very reliable
- Excellent for transactional email
- Slightly more “enterprise” feel than Resend
- Still pretty simple
Cheapest/easiest if you’re already in AWS: Amazon SES
- Powerful and cheap
- But more setup and less beginner-friendly
- Not the simplest choice
If you want marketing + transactional in one:
- SendGrid or Mailgun
- More features, but more complexity than Resend
My recommendation
For a SaaS built with Next.js + Supabase, I’d pick:
Resend
because it’s the easiest to implement and feels very modern for product/email workflows.
Supabase-specific note
If you’re using Supabase Auth, you may not even need a separate email API for:
- magic links
- signup confirmations
- password reset emails
Supabase can send those itself via its auth email templates and SMTP settings.
If you need product emails like:
- onboarding
- alerts
- invoices
- digest emails
then use Resend.
If you want, I can also give you:
- the simplest production-ready setup for Next.js + Resend, or
- a comparison table of Resend vs Postmark vs SES vs SendGrid.
