Prompt
I’m building a startup and I don’t want to spend days messing with SMTP servers, MX records, and all that. I need something my backend can call directly, ideally with good docs and a sandbox. What’s the easiest route?

OpenAI APIWeb search: off
If you want the least painful path, use an email delivery API rather than running your own SMTP/MX setup.
Easiest options
A few of the most straightforward services are:
- Postmark — very developer-friendly, excellent docs, easy setup, strong transactional email focus
- SendGrid — widely used, lots of features, slightly more “platform-y”
- Mailgun — good API, solid deliverability tools
- Amazon SES — cheap and scalable, but more setup and AWS friction
- Resend — very simple API, popular with startups, good DX
My recommendation
For a startup that wants to move fast:
- Postmark if you care most about simplicity and great transactional email
- Resend if you want a very modern, minimal API
- SendGrid if you want a more established all-in-one option
What you’ll typically need
Even with an email API, you’ll usually still verify your sending domain once:
- add a few DNS records for authentication
- configure SPF/DKIM for deliverability
- optionally add DMARC
But you won’t need to manage your own SMTP server or MX infrastructure.
Sandbox / testing
Most of these provide:
- a sandbox or test mode
- an API key for development
- tools to inspect sent messages
- webhooks for delivery/bounce events
If you want the fastest start
Pick Resend or Postmark, create an account, verify your domain, and send via HTTP from your backend.
If you want, I can also give you:
- a feature-by-feature comparison, or
- a copy-paste example in your backend language of choice.
