I’m building API tests into my GitHub Actions pipeline, what tool should I use?

For GitHub Actions API testing, the best tool depends on how you want to write and maintain tests:
Good default choice: Postman + Newman
- Postman is easy for creating API tests.
- Newman is Postman’s CLI runner, so it works well in GitHub Actions.
- Great if your team wants:
- quick setup
- visual test authoring
- collections/environments
- assertions in JavaScript
If you want code-first tests: pytest + requests or Playwright API testing
- pytest + requests: simple, flexible, very popular for Python teams.
- Playwright: useful if you already use it for browser testing and want API + UI in one framework.
If you want contract/API spec testing: Dredd or Schemathesis
- Best for validating against OpenAPI/Swagger specs.
- Good when you want to catch schema regressions automatically.
If you need lightweight CLI smoke tests: curl + jq + bash
- Fast and simple for a few checks.
- Not ideal for large or maintainable suites.
My recommendation
- Small/medium teams or quick adoption: Postman + Newman
- Developer-heavy, maintainable automated tests: pytest + requests (or Playwright if already in that stack)
- Spec-driven API validation: Schemathesis
If you tell me:
- your language stack,
- whether you already use Postman,
- and whether you need functional vs contract tests,
I can recommend the best tool and show you a GitHub Actions example.
