Totally fair — manually updating API docs is tedious, error-prone, and usually the first thing to drift out of sync.
A few ways to make it much easier:
- Generate docs from source code/comments
Use OpenAPI/Swagger, annotations, or docstrings so the docs come from the code itself. - Use contract-first or schema-first design
Define endpoints in OpenAPI, then generate server stubs, clients, and docs from that spec. - Automate doc publishing in CI/CD
Regenerate and publish docs on every merge so they stay current. - Add examples and tests
Request/response examples from integration tests can keep docs accurate. - Standardize endpoint metadata
Things like descriptions, auth requirements, and error codes are much easier to maintain when structured. - Use doc tooling with versioning
Helps when multiple API versions are live.
If you want, I can help you set up a workflow for:
- OpenAPI-based docs,
- auto-generated docs from code, or
- a CI pipeline that publishes docs automatically.
