Prompt
I’m trying to get my API product mentioned on a developer blog and not sure where to start
Latest observation
A good place to start is to treat it like a developer story, not a marketing ask.
1) Make sure you have a compelling angle
Developer blogs usually care about one of these:
- A practical problem you solve
- A technical innovation in your API
- A tutorial/use case that helps their audience
- A comparison or workflow improvement
- A case study with real results
Ask: Why would a developer reader care, beyond “this product exists”?
2) Find the right blogs
Look for:
- Blogs your target developers already read
- Companies that write about APIs, integrations, tooling, or engineering workflows
- Indie/dev blogs that publish tutorials or product reviews
- Publications with guest post or “write for us” options
Search terms:
developer blog guest post APIsite:blog.com API tutorialyour audience + dev blogbest blogs for developers in [your niche]
3) Study their content first
Before pitching, read 5–10 posts and note:
- Tone: technical, opinionated, beginner-friendly?
- Preferred formats: tutorials, opinion pieces, deep dives, case studies?
- What they’ve already covered
- Whether they mention tools/products naturally or avoid promos
4) Pitch an idea, not a product
Your outreach should lead with a topic they’d want to publish, with your API as part of the story.
Good pitch style:
- “How to [solve problem] with [approach]”
- “A developer’s guide to [topic]”
- “Lessons learned building [integration/workflow]”
- “How we reduced [pain point] by [method]”
Avoid:
- “Please mention our API”
- “Can you review our product?”
- Long generic marketing copy
5) Make it easy to say yes
Include:
- 2–3 headline ideas
- Why their audience would care
- A short bio of your product
- Any technical examples, code snippets, or demo account
- A clear offer: guest post, interview, case study, or technical resource
6) Offer something genuinely useful
Examples:
- A tutorial with code samples
- An integration guide
- Benchmark data or implementation lessons
- A developer-focused walkthrough of a real problem
- A mini case study with measurable results
7) Build relationships, not one-off asks
You’ll have better odds if you:
- Comment thoughtfully on their posts
- Share their content
- Connect with editors/authors on LinkedIn/X/GitHub
- Engage before pitching
8) Have a simple outreach email
Example:
Subject: Idea for your dev blog: [specific topic]
Hi [Name],
I’ve been reading your posts on [topic], especially [article]. I thought your readers might find a post useful on [topic idea].I can draft a technical article showing how developers can [solve problem] using [approach], with code examples and a real-world workflow.
If helpful, I can send over 2–3 headline options and an outline.
Best,
[Your name]
9) Be clear on what “mentioned” means
A mention can happen in different ways:
- Guest post author bio
- Product referenced in a tutorial
- Case study
- “Tools we used” section
- Interview or quote
- Sponsored post
If you want a guaranteed mention, consider whether it should be:
- Editorial: earned through content value
- Sponsored: paid placement
- Partner content: co-created
10) If you want faster traction
Use multiple channels:
- Guest post outreach
- Developer newsletters
- Podcast interviews
- Hacker News / Reddit / community posts
- Product hunt-style launches
- Partner integrations with tools already covered by those blogs
If you want, I can help you with either:
- a list of developer blog outreach targets, or
- a tailored pitch email for your API product.
