That’s a common pain point—ABBYY can be excellent on clean documents, but messy scans often expose its limits.
A few things usually help:
1) Improve the scan/image first
OCR quality often depends more on preprocessing than the OCR engine itself.
- Deskew tilted pages
- Denoise speckles and scan artifacts
- Increase contrast / binarize
- Fix rotation/orientation
- Crop borders
- Sharpen faint text
- If possible, scan at 300 DPI or higher
2) Check document type
ABBYY may struggle more with:
- low-contrast photocopies
- handwritten notes
- stamps, highlights, annotations
- skewed or warped pages
- multi-column layouts with tables
- degraded fax-like scans
3) Tune ABBYY settings
If you’re using ABBYY FineReader / SDK:
- make sure the correct language pack(s) are selected
- use document layout analysis appropriate for the page type
- try different settings for picture-only vs text pages
- enable any image preprocessing options available
- review whether it’s treating the page as mixed content, table-heavy, or simple text
4) Consider hybrid workflows
For messy scans, a pipeline often beats a single OCR pass:
- preprocess with OpenCV / PIL
- OCR with ABBYY
- post-correct using dictionaries / domain terms / LLM validation
- route low-confidence pages to manual review
5) Benchmark alternatives
If ABBYY is underperforming for your specific scan quality, it may be worth testing:
- Google Cloud Vision OCR
- AWS Textract
- Microsoft Azure OCR
- Tesseract + strong preprocessing
- newer specialized OCR models if your docs are highly degraded
If you want, I can help you:
- diagnose why ABBYY is missing text on your scans,
- suggest preprocessing steps, or
- compare ABBYY against alternatives for your use case.
