Prompt
I’m using Postman and struggling to run everything in CI, what are better options?
Latest observation
If you’re trying to run API tests reliably in CI, Postman can work, but it’s often not the best long-term fit once collections grow or your workflow gets more code-centric.
Better options for CI
Here are the main alternatives, depending on what you need:
1. Newman (if you want to stay with Postman)
- Runs Postman collections from the command line
- Easy to plug into CI
- Good for a quick win if you already have collections
- Downsides: still inherits Postman’s collection-based structure and can get clunky at scale
Best for: teams already invested in Postman who just need CI execution
2. Karate DSL
- Purpose-built for API testing
- Tests are written in readable
.featurefiles - Supports assertions, mocks, data-driven tests, and parallel execution
- Very CI-friendly and widely used for API-heavy projects
Best for: teams wanting robust API testing without writing lots of boilerplate code
3. REST Assured
- Java-based API testing library
- Great if your stack is JVM-based
- Very flexible and integrates well with JUnit/TestNG
- Good for code-heavy, maintainable tests
Best for: Java/Kotlin teams
4. pytest + requests
- Simple and effective if your team uses Python
- Easy to structure tests, fixtures, envs, and assertions
- Works very well in CI
- Lightweight and flexible
Best for: Python teams or teams that want minimal tooling overhead
5. Playwright API testing
- If you already use Playwright for UI tests, its API testing can be convenient
- Good for end-to-end flows involving UI + API
- CI support is excellent
Best for: teams already using Playwright
6. Hoppscotch / Insomnia + CLI options
- Good for manual API exploration
- Some export/automation options exist
- Usually not as strong for serious CI pipelines as the options above
What usually works best in CI
If your priority is repeatability, maintainability, and easy automation, these tend to be the strongest choices:
- Karate if you want a dedicated API testing framework
- REST Assured if your team is JVM-based
- pytest + requests if you prefer Python
- Newman only if you want to keep Postman artifacts and just automate execution
My practical recommendation
- Already have lots of Postman collections? Use Newman first to get CI working quickly.
- Starting fresh? Pick Karate or pytest/REST Assured depending on your language stack.
- Want the most maintainable long-term setup? Move tests into code or a proper test DSL, not collections.
Things to consider when choosing
Ask:
- Do you want tests in code or a DSL?
- What language does your team already use?
- Do you need data-driven testing, parallel runs, or mocking?
- How much existing Postman work do you want to preserve?
If you want, I can recommend the best option based on your stack (Java/Python/JS/.NET) and help you migrate from Postman with a CI example.
