I need better logs than what Postmark gives me

If Postmark’s built-in logs aren’t enough, the usual next step is to add your own email event logging around it.
What to log yourself
Capture a record for every email action:
- Message ID from Postmark
- Recipient
- Subject
- Template ID / alias if used
- Send time
- Status: queued, sent, bounced, delivered, opened, clicked, failed
- Error details for failed sends
- Webhook event payloads for delivery/open/click/bounce events
Best way to get better logs
1) Log at send time
When your app calls Postmark, store:
- request payload
- Postmark response
- correlation ID from your app
- timestamp
This gives you a local source of truth even if Postmark’s UI is limited.
2) Use Postmark webhooks
Set up webhooks for:
- delivery
- open
- click
- bounce
- spam complaint
- inbound messages, if relevant
Then write those events into your own database or log system. That’s usually where the most useful visibility comes from.
3) Centralize in a proper log/observability tool
Instead of relying on Postmark alone, pipe events into:
- Datadog
- Splunk
- ELK / OpenSearch
- CloudWatch
- BigQuery / Snowflake for analytics
- A database table if you just need app-level tracing
4) Add searchable identifiers
Include a unique ID in every email record, such as:
- internal
email_send_id - user ID
- order ID
- campaign ID
That makes it much easier to trace one email across retries, sends, and webhook events.
Suggested minimum schema
A table like this is often enough:
idprovider=postmarkmessage_idrecipientsubjecttemplate_idstatussent_atlast_event_aterror_codeerror_messagemetadata(JSON)created_atupdated_at
And a separate events table:
email_idevent_typeevent_atpayload(JSON)
If you want richer debugging
Consider:
- logging the full request/response for failed sends
- storing webhook payloads verbatim
- adding retry attempt counts
- tracking SMTP/API latency
- correlating email logs with app logs and user actions
If you want, I can help with either:
- a Postmark webhook logging design,
- a database schema for email logs, or
- example code for Node/Python/Ruby/.NET to capture all events.
