Is SES worth the extra setup?

OpenAI APIWeb search: off
Usually yes, if you care about reliable transactional email at scale—but it depends on your use case.
When SES is worth it
Choose Amazon SES if you want:
- Low cost: usually much cheaper than SendGrid/Mailgun/Postmark for higher volumes.
- Good deliverability tools: SPF, DKIM, DMARC support, dedicated IPs, suppression lists, reputation tracking.
- AWS-native integration: easy if your app already runs on AWS (Lambda, EC2, ECS, SNS, CloudWatch, IAM).
- Scalability: handles large sending volumes well.
- Transactional email: password resets, receipts, alerts, notifications.
When it may not be worth the setup
SES can feel like extra work if you want:
- Fastest possible setup with minimal DNS/config steps
- A polished UI for managing templates, logs, campaigns, and analytics
- Built-in marketing tools
- A provider with more hand-holding/support out of the box
For small apps or prototypes, the setup overhead can outweigh the savings.
Main downside of SES
The biggest tradeoff is setup complexity:
- verifying domains
- adding DNS records
- warming up sending reputation
- moving out of sandbox
- handling bounce/complaint events
It’s not hard, just more “infrastructure-y” than some alternatives.
Simple rule of thumb
- Transactional email + AWS + cost sensitivity → SES is usually worth it
- Need convenience, dashboards, and quick launch → use a simpler provider
