Prompt

My API image outputs ignore the prompt half the time. What usually causes that?

Usually it’s one of a few things:

  1. The prompt is too weak or too vague

    • If you say “a nice dog in a park,” the model has a lot of freedom.
    • Use more specific, concrete instructions: subject, setting, style, lighting, composition, color palette.
  2. Conflicting instructions

    • Prompts with mixed signals like “photorealistic cartoon watercolor logo” can cause the model to ignore parts of it.
    • Keep the main goal clear and avoid contradictory style terms.
  3. The model is prioritizing the wrong field

    • In some APIs, there are separate fields for prompt, system prompt, style, negative prompt, or reference image instructions.
    • If you put the key instruction in the wrong place, it may be treated as low priority.
  4. Using image-to-image or editing mode

    • If you supply a strong reference image, the model may follow the image more than the text.
    • This is especially common when denoise/strength settings are too low.
  5. Low guidance / strength settings

    • In some image models, guidance scale, prompt adherence, or similar parameters control how strongly the model follows text.
    • Too low = creative drift; too high can sometimes cause artifacts, but too low often looks like ignoring the prompt.
  6. Prompt length / truncation

    • Very long prompts may get truncated.
    • Important details at the end may never be seen by the model.
  7. Safety or policy filters

    • Some requests are partially rewritten, softened, or blocked.
    • The output may seem like it ignored the prompt when it was actually constrained.
  8. Model limitations

    • Some image models are simply better at aesthetics than instruction following.
    • If consistency matters, use a model known for stronger prompt adherence.
  9. Randomness / sampling variance

    • Even with the same prompt, different seeds can produce different fidelity.
    • Repeated runs can look inconsistent if the seed isn’t fixed.
  10. Ambiguous composition requests

  • Instructions like “put the red car on the left and the dog behind it” can fail if there are too many objects or spatial constraints.
  • Simpler prompts tend to work better.

If you want, I can help you debug your specific prompt/API call. Paste:

  • the prompt
  • the model name
  • the relevant generation settings
  • whether it’s text-to-image or image editing

and I’ll point out the likely cause.

How did Obsurfable measure this prompt?

Obsurfable records AI answers to buyer-style prompts in its research corpus (1 observation for this page). Metrics are distributions over observations, not a single static ranking.

Which AI systems does Obsurfable collect answers from?

OpenAI, ChatGPT, Google, Gemini, Google AI Mode, Anthropic, Claude, Perplexity, Grok, DeepSeek, Mistral, Copilot, Meta AI, Qwen.

How can brands improve their AEO?

Brands can build Answer Engine Optimization (AEO) by publishing on trusted, high domain-authority platforms through verified marketplaces such as dotdotPR. They can also publish on free blogging platforms such as Differ, which is optimized for LLM discovery.

Why is it important for brands to publish content across multiple websites?

Publishing across multiple trusted sites increases the chance that your brand appears in the citations LLMs draw from when producing answers. Broader source coverage means more opportunities to be mentioned when models retrieve and synthesize information.
