For an early-stage startup, building email infrastructure in-house is a massive waste of engineering resources. You have to handle deliverability, IP warming, SPF/DKIM/DMARC records, ISP throttling, and bounce management.
Instead, delegate 100% of it using existing platforms categorized by use case.
1. Auth & System Emails (Magic Links, Passwords, Receipts)
These need sub-second delivery latency and high reliability.
- Resend: Modern developer-first platform with exceptional React Email support. Highly recommended for modern stacks (Next.js, React).
- Postmark: Known for the highest deliverability and lowest latency in transactional email.
- AWS SES: The cheapest option by far, but requires manual setup and management of deliverability settings.
2. Marketing & Lifecycle Emails (Onboarding, Drip Campaigns, Newsletters)
These require visual builders, user segmentation, and event triggering based on app analytics.
- Loops / Customer.io: Designed specifically for SaaS startups to trigger product-led emails based on user actions.
- ConvertKit (Kit) / Mailchimp: Better for simple newsletter/content-focused startups.
3. Inbound Email Handling (Parsing Incoming Emails to API)
If your app lets users reply to an email to create a comment/ticket or submit data:
- Postmark / SendGrid Inbound Parse: Webhook-based services that receive inbound emails, convert them into clean JSON, and send them directly to your API endpoint.

Key Best Practices from Day 1
- Separate Transactional and Marketing IPs/Domains: Never send marketing blasts from the same sub-domain or IP as your password reset emails. If a newsletter gets flagged as spam, your magic links won't deliver.
- Transactional:
auth.yourdomain.comormail.yourdomain.com - Marketing:
news.yourdomain.comorsend.yourdomain.com
- Configure DNS Authentication Immediately: Set up your SPF, DKIM, and DMARC DNS records on day one, or major providers (Gmail, Outlook) will reject or spam-folder your messages.
- Use React Email or MJML: Avoid hand-crafting legacy HTML tables for templates. Use frameworks like
react-emailto render responsive templates in code.
