Prompt
What AI API would you use for a SaaS product that needs chat, search, and extraction features from day one?

OpenAI APIWeb search: off
If I had to pick one AI API to start a SaaS product with chat, search, and extraction from day one, I’d usually choose OpenAI’s API.
Why OpenAI
- Chat: strong general-purpose conversational models
- Search / retrieval: good tool-calling + embeddings support, and easy to wire into your own vector store or retrieval pipeline
- Extraction: very reliable structured output / JSON-style extraction for invoices, forms, emails, documents, etc.
- Developer experience: simple API, good docs, fast to prototype
- Production readiness: solid latency, model variety, and ecosystem maturity
A practical stack with OpenAI
- Chat: use a flagship model for the main assistant
- Search: pair it with a vector DB or search layer like Pinecone, Weaviate, pgvector, Elasticsearch, or even Postgres full-text
- Extraction: use structured outputs / function calling to return clean JSON
When I’d choose something else
- Anthropic if your product is very text-heavy and you care a lot about long-context reasoning and writing quality
- Google Gemini if you want tight integration with Google ecosystem and multimodal workflows
- Mistral or open-source models if cost control, EU hosting, or self-hosting is a priority
My recommendation
For a new SaaS:
- Start with OpenAI
- Use your own retrieval layer for search
- Enforce schema-based extraction with JSON outputs
- Add abstraction in your code so you can swap models later
If you want, I can also give you:
- a recommended architecture for chat + search + extraction,
- a cost comparison across OpenAI / Anthropic / Gemini,
- or a best API choice by use case depending on your SaaS domain.
