What email provider would you choose for an early-stage startup?

OpenAI APIWeb search: off
For an early-stage startup, I’d usually choose Google Workspace.
Why
- Fast to set up: domain email, user accounts, aliases, and groups are straightforward.
- Familiar UX: most people already know Gmail and Google Calendar.
- Good collaboration: Docs, Drive, Meet, shared calendars, and permissions are useful from day one.
- Strong deliverability/reliability: generally solid for business email.
- Easy hiring/offboarding: simple to add/remove team members and manage access.
When I might pick something else
- Microsoft 365 if your team is already deep in Outlook/Teams/Excel and prefers Microsoft tools.
- Zoho Mail if cost is the main concern and you want a lighter setup.
- Proton Mail if privacy/security is a top priority, though it’s less convenient for some startup workflows.
My practical recommendation
If you want the safest default: Google Workspace Starter.
It’s usually the best mix of simplicity, collaboration, and scalability for a startup.
If you want, I can also give you a startup email setup checklist and compare Google Workspace vs Microsoft 365 vs Zoho side by side.
