OpenAI APIWeb search: off
The easiest way is usually to generate docs from your API schema/spec, instead of writing them manually.
Best simple options
1. OpenAPI / Swagger
If your API is RESTful, this is the most common route.
- Define your endpoints in an OpenAPI spec (
openapi.yamloropenapi.json) - Use tools like:
- Swagger UI — interactive docs
- Redoc — clean, readable docs
- Stoplight — nice editor + docs
- Many frameworks can generate the spec for you:
- FastAPI: automatic docs built in
- Spring Boot: springdoc-openapi
- Express: swagger-jsdoc / tsoa
- Django REST Framework: drf-spectacular / drf-yasg
Why this is easiest:
You write the schema once, and the docs update with your API.
2. Use built-in framework docs
If you’re using a framework that supports it, this is often the fastest.
Examples:
- FastAPI → automatic Swagger UI and ReDoc
- NestJS → Swagger module
- ASP.NET Core → Swagger/OpenAPI support
- Spring Boot → springdoc-openapi
3. Docs from Postman collections
If you already test your API in Postman:
- Export a Postman collection
- Publish it as documentation
- Good for quick start guides and examples
This is simpler, but usually less robust than OpenAPI.
If you want the absolute easiest path
- REST API: use OpenAPI + Swagger UI
- GraphQL API: use GraphQL introspection + GraphiQL / Apollo Sandbox
- FastAPI: you get docs almost for free
My recommendation
If you haven’t started yet, do this:
- Create an OpenAPI spec
- Use Swagger UI or Redoc
- Add example requests/responses
- Publish it alongside your API
If you tell me what stack you’re using, I can suggest the simplest setup for that specific framework.
