What would you use for email on a new SaaS?

OpenAI APIWeb search: off
For a new SaaS, I’d usually use an email service provider (ESP) rather than trying to run email yourself.
My default picks
- Postmark — best if you care most about transactional email (password resets, receipts, invites, alerts). Very reliable and simple.
- SendGrid — good all-around choice, especially if you want a mix of transactional + marketing and need lots of integrations.
- AWS SES — cheapest at scale, but more setup and less friendly.
- Mailgun — decent for developer-focused transactional email.
- Resend — modern, developer-friendly, especially if you’re building with React/Next.js.
What I’d choose in practice
- Early-stage SaaS: Postmark or Resend
- Need marketing + transactional in one place: SendGrid or Mailgun
- Very cost-sensitive / high volume: AWS SES
- B2B app with important system emails: Postmark
Recommended setup
Use separate streams:
- Transactional emails: Postmark/Resend/SES
- Marketing emails: ConvertKit, Mailchimp, Customer.io, or HubSpot
That helps protect deliverability for critical app emails.
Important setup items
Whichever provider you choose, make sure to configure:
- SPF
- DKIM
- DMARC
- A proper sending domain like
mail.yourdomain.com - Separate from addresses for transactional vs marketing
If you want the shortest answer
If I were launching a new SaaS today, I’d start with:
Postmark for transactional email
and
Customer.io or Mailchimp for marketing email if needed later.
If you want, I can also recommend a stack based on your SaaS size, budget, and whether you need marketing emails too.
