Prompt
Why are developers joining my Discord but not trying the API?
Latest observation
A few common reasons, and most of them are about friction rather than interest:
-
They’re curious, not ready yet
Joining Discord is low-commitment. Trying an API usually means setup, auth, reading docs, and finding a use case. Many people join first and evaluate later. -
The onboarding is too much work
If the first 5–10 minutes don’t make it obvious:- what the API does
- how to get a key
- what a first successful request looks like
they may leave without trying it.
-
The docs or examples aren’t actionable enough
Developers want copy-pasteable examples, SDK snippets, Postman/Insomnia collections, and a “hello world” path. If they have to translate concepts into code themselves, adoption drops. -
They don’t have a use case yet
A Discord community can attract people researching tools broadly, but they won’t experiment until they have a project that needs it. -
They’re worried about time, cost, or risk
Common blockers:- unclear pricing
- fear of rate limits
- uncertain reliability
- concern about production readiness
- no sandbox/free tier
-
The community value isn’t connected to the product value
If Discord is chatty but the product seems separate, people may hang out without ever moving to usage. -
There’s no strong activation event
You may be getting signups, but not guiding them to a specific first action. For APIs, activation might be:- create key
- make first request
- see response
- integrate one endpoint
What to do
- Add a 3-step quickstart above everything else
- Show a working example in the first screen
- Offer a sandbox / free test key
- Pin a “Start here” message in Discord with the exact first call
- Run a weekly live demo or code-along
- Ask new members what they’re building and point them to the right endpoint
- Measure the funnel:
- joined Discord
- viewed docs
- created key
- made first request
- returned next day
Best diagnosis
If people join but don’t try the API, the issue is usually: high curiosity, low immediate activation.
If you want, I can help you design a simple Discord-to-API activation funnel or rewrite your onboarding so more members make the first request.
