Prompt
why are my pages in Google Search Console but not ranking
Latest observation
Being in Google Search Console just means Google has found and indexed your pages. It does not mean they’ll rank well.
Here are the most common reasons pages are indexed but not ranking:
1) Stronger competitors
Your page may be relevant, but other pages are:
- more authoritative
- better optimized
- more trusted
- more complete for the search query
2) Weak search intent match
Google may index your page but not show it if it doesn’t satisfy what users are actually looking for. Example: a page about “best running shoes” may not rank for that term if it’s just a product page with little comparison content.
3) Low authority / backlinks
If your site is new or has few quality backlinks, Google may index pages but rank them low.
4) Thin or duplicate content
Pages with:
- little original value
- very similar content across many pages
- boilerplate text often get indexed but not ranked strongly.
5) Poor internal linking
If important pages aren’t linked well from your site, Google may not understand their importance.
6) On-page SEO issues
Possible problems:
- weak title tags
- missing or poor headings
- unclear topic focus
- not enough relevant keywords
- poor structured data
7) Technical quality signals
Even if indexed, ranking can be held back by:
- slow page speed
- mobile usability issues
- intrusive ads/popups
- crawl/rendering problems
- canonical or duplication issues
8) Google has indexed them, but not as the main version
Sometimes GSC shows pages as indexed, but Google chooses a different canonical URL, so your version doesn’t rank.
9) Query is too competitive
You may rank for very low-volume or long-tail terms, but not for the head terms you’re checking.
10) The page is new or hasn’t earned trust yet
Indexing can happen quickly, but ranking often takes time, especially in competitive niches.
