Prompt
Why are my recommendations showing the same items over and over?
Latest observation
That usually happens for one of a few reasons:
-
The recommender is overfitting to a narrow set of signals
If it relies too heavily on one behavior type—like recent clicks, views, or purchases—it may keep picking items very similar to the last few actions. -
Not enough item diversity / candidate pool
If the system has only a small set of eligible items, or if filters remove many options, the model may repeatedly return the same top items. -
Popularity bias
Some recommenders favor the most popular or highest-converting items, so the same “best” items keep dominating the list. -
No freshness or repetition suppression
If you’re not tracking what a user has already been shown, the system may keep re-serving the same recommendations. -
Ranking model instability or stale features
Badly updated features, cached results, or a stale model can cause the same ranking to be reused across requests. -
Cold-start fallback
For users with little data, the system may fall back to the same generic popular items for everyone.
What to check
- Are you excluding items already shown recently?
- Is your candidate generation too small?
- Are filters unintentionally removing most items?
- Is the model using fresh user/item features?
- Are you balancing relevance with diversity?
- Are you caching recommendations too aggressively?
Common fixes
- Add repeat suppression or recently seen filters
- Increase candidate pool size
- Add diversification in ranking
- Limit how often popular items can appear
- Refresh features/models more frequently
- Mix personalized recommendations with exploration
If you want, I can help you debug it more concretely—e.g., by looking at your recommendation pipeline or ranking logic.
