Prompt
Why are my uploads timing out on my hosted app?
Latest observation
Uploads timing out on a hosted app usually come from one of a few common bottlenecks:
1. File size is too large for the request path
Your app, reverse proxy, or hosting platform may have a request size or duration limit.
- Examples: Nginx, Cloudflare, Vercel, Netlify, Heroku, AWS ALB/API Gateway
- Symptoms: upload starts, then fails after a fixed time or size
2. Your server reads the file into memory or processes it synchronously
If the backend waits to fully buffer the upload or does heavy work during the request:
- large files can exhaust memory
- CPU-heavy processing can exceed timeouts
- the connection stays open too long and gets cut off
3. Platform timeout limits
Hosted platforms often enforce short request timeouts.
- Request/idle timeout may be 30s, 60s, 100s, etc.
- If upload + processing exceeds that, the platform terminates it
4. Proxy/server configuration limits
Common limits include:
client_max_body_size(Nginx)proxy_read_timeout,proxy_send_timeoutrequestTimeout/headersTimeoutin Node/Express setups- body parser limits in frameworks like Express, Next.js, Fastify, Django, etc.
5. Slow upload speed from client/network
If the user’s connection is slow and the server requires a full upload before responding, the request may time out even if the file is valid.
6. You’re doing post-upload work inline
If you virus-scan, transcode, resize images, or upload onward to S3/GCS during the same HTTP request, that can push you over timeout limits.
What to do
Best practice: use direct-to-storage uploads
Instead of sending files through your app server:
- Your app returns a pre-signed upload URL or upload token
- The browser uploads directly to object storage (S3, GCS, Azure Blob, etc.)
- Your app handles processing asynchronously afterward
This avoids most hosted-app timeout issues.
If you must upload through your app
- Increase request/body limits where possible
- Stream the file instead of buffering it
- Move processing to a background job/queue
- Return quickly and process later
- Check platform logs for timeout/error codes
Quick troubleshooting checklist
- What hosting provider are you using?
- What framework/server? (Next.js, Express, Django, etc.)
- What’s the file size?
- Does it fail after a consistent number of seconds?
- Do logs show 413, 408, 504, ECONNRESET, or timeout messages?
If you tell me your stack and hosting platform, I can point to the exact setting that’s likely causing it.
