Prompt
Why is Google Calendar API not enough for syncing Outlook calendars too?
Latest observation
Google Calendar API only works well for Google Calendar data in Google’s ecosystem. It’s not enough for syncing Outlook calendars too because Outlook calendars live in a different platform with different APIs, auth, event models, and sync rules.
Here’s the short version:
1) It only talks to Google Calendar
The Google Calendar API can read/write calendars that belong to Google accounts.
It does not give you direct access to Microsoft 365 / Outlook calendar data.
2) Outlook uses Microsoft’s API and auth
To sync Outlook calendars, you typically need the Microsoft Graph API and Microsoft OAuth permissions.
Google API credentials won’t authorize you to access Microsoft calendars.
3) Different data models and behavior
Even if both calendars represent “events,” they differ in details like:
- recurrence rules
- reminders
- attendee handling
- timezone behavior
- free/busy semantics
- cancellations/updates
- organizer ownership
A real sync has to map between these models carefully.
4) Sync requires bidirectional change tracking
To keep Outlook and Google in sync, you need logic for:
- initial import
- detecting new/updated/deleted events on both sides
- conflict resolution
- preventing duplicate loops
- handling missed updates and retries
The Google Calendar API doesn’t solve those cross-system sync problems by itself.
5) Permissions and user consent are separate
A user must grant access separately to:
- their Google Calendar
- their Outlook/Microsoft calendar
One API can’t replace consent for the other provider.
6) Server-side sync usually needs both APIs
A proper sync service commonly uses:
- Google Calendar API for Google calendars
- Microsoft Graph API for Outlook calendars
Then it translates and reconciles changes between them.
Analogy
It’s like having the API for Gmail and expecting it to sync your Yahoo Mail automatically.
They’re both email systems, but you need access to each one directly.

- how a Google ↔ Outlook calendar sync architecture works, or
- why “calendar sharing” is not the same as “calendar syncing.”
