Prompt
Why is my LLM API timing out on long prompts?
Latest observation
Long prompts can cause timeouts for a few common reasons:
1) More tokens = more work
LLMs process input token by token, so a longer prompt takes longer to:
- tokenize
- run through the model
- generate a response
If your prompt is very large, the request may exceed your client’s timeout before the model finishes.
2) Context window pressure
Every model has a maximum context length. If your prompt plus expected output is near that limit:
- inference gets slower
- the model may truncate input
- your API may fail or stall while handling the request
3) Server-side latency
Even if your own code is fast, the model backend may be slower for:
- large prompts
- high traffic
- big completion lengths
- expensive reasoning models
4) Client timeout is too short
Many HTTP clients default to fairly short read/connect timeouts. A request that takes 20–60 seconds can look like a “timeout” even though the model is still working.
5) Retries and buffering make it worse
If you retry automatically on timeout, you may increase load and make subsequent attempts even slower. Also, some SDKs buffer the entire response instead of streaming it, so you wait longer before seeing anything.
What to do
Short-term fixes
- Increase your client timeout
- Use streaming responses so you can start receiving tokens earlier
- Reduce prompt size by removing irrelevant text
- Limit max output tokens
- Split large tasks into chunks
Better architecture
- Summarize or compress long history before sending it
- Store retrieval data externally and only send relevant excerpts
- Use a smaller/faster model for preprocessing
- Cache repeated prompt prefixes if your platform supports it
Debugging checks
- Log prompt token count and completion token count
- Compare latency for small vs. large prompts
- Test with streaming on/off
- Verify whether the timeout is from your client, proxy, or the API server
If you want, I can help you diagnose it based on:
- the model you’re using,
- your client/library, and
- the prompt length and timeout settings.
